Commissioned in 1954 for Pan American World Airways as a tool for the jet age, the GMT-Master introduced a fourth hand geared to a 24-hour bezel—simple, elegant, and immediately useful. The original 6542 wore a Bakelite bezel that cracked easily; almost every surviving example has a replacement, making original inserts a collector's grail. The 1675, produced from 1959 to 1980, is the model's defining reference: gilt then matte dials, pointed then rounded crown guards, 'Pepsi' and 'root beer' bezels. The 16750 arrived in 1980 with the quickset date and a higher-beat movement, followed by the 16700 (fixed hour hand) and 16710 (independently adjustable hour hand, a true GMT). The Pepsi, Coke, and 'Fuchsia' faded bezels are the icons of vintage GMT collecting, and case originality—drilled lugs, sharp bevels, undisturbed engravings—commands a heavy premium.
