The 1680 introduced the cyclops date window to the Submariner line and split the collector market forever. Its earliest production (1969–1975) featured 'Submariner' written in red on the dial—the celebrated 'Red Sub'—which evolved through six documented dial marks. From 1975 onward, standard white text replaced the red, but the case, movement, and matte dial remained. A Red Sub with a matching Mk-appropriate hands, bezel insert, and unpolished case is a serious collector piece; an all-white 1680 in honest condition remains one of the best entry points into vintage sports Rolex.
