The 1655 is one of the most idiosyncratic watches Rolex ever produced: a fixed 24-hour bezel engraved directly into the case, a straight orange 24-hour hand that shares the movement with the running hour hand, and none of the utility of a true GMT. It was designed for cave explorers and produced in relatively low numbers for nearly 14 years, evolving through five distinct 'Mk' dial variants (Mk 1 through Mk 5) that trade at meaningfully different prices. The persistent 'Steve McQueen' nickname is dealer folklore—McQueen was a Submariner man—but the association helped drive prices to serious levels through the 2010s and beyond.
