Rolex introduced the Explorer to commemorate the 1953 Everest ascent by Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. The design brief was legibility above all: black gloss dial, oversized 3-6-9 Arabic numerals, and a Mercedes hour hand. The 1016, produced almost unchanged from 1963 to 1989, is one of the longest-lived references in Rolex history and a masterclass in restraint. Early gilt-dial 1016s, with underlined 'chapter ring' minute tracks and cream tritium plots, are among the most beautiful watches Rolex ever made. The 1989 14270 introduced sapphire, applied white-gold indices, and the modern black dial; the 39mm 214270 (2010) modernized proportions, and the current 36mm 124270 returns the watch to its original scale. For collectors who prize honesty of purpose over complication, the Explorer is the answer.
