Bezel inserts are consumable parts that were routinely replaced during Rolex service throughout the vintage era, meaning most vintage Submariners and GMT-Masters do not wear their original inserts. Collectors care because faded 'ghost' inserts, 'fuchsia' Pepsis, and 'tropical' brown Coke inserts command significant premiums. Aluminum inserts (all vintage and most modern Rolexes through 2005) fade through UV exposure; ceramic 'Cerachrom' inserts (2005+) do not fade at all. Correct fonts, correct luminous pip type (radium, tritium, or Luminova), and correct triangle-marker geometry are essential to authentication.
